School House at INTAG - Ecuador - School house for an ecological reserve in Intag

The Story on How it all got Started

LETTER FROM ANNIE De MAYO
07 Oct 2008 11:32:31 -0700 (PDT)

I am an exchange student from the states studying abroad in Ecuador. For the second week of our time here we were in a cloud forest, in Intag,Ecuador. During our stay at the cloud forest in Intag not only did we learn about the natural environment of the cloud forest but  were also fortunate enough to get to know members of the community. One family in particular made an impact on all of us throughout our stay. Roberto, the father of this family, is active in the anti-mining struggle in Intag and Junin and he runs an ecological reserve just outside of Intag. Roberto always brought his children to work. For most of us, playing with his children, Jordie and Emily, was the highlight of our day. They were the sweetest, most charismatic children and whether we were picking coffee beans or going on a hike to learn about plants, they were always there to entertain. Personally, my Spanish was not great during our time in the cloud forest and talking with Jordie and Emily was much easier than any of the adults in Intag. I will never forget the time that Emily gave me a dead butterfly. I know you may be thinking: ³what a strange gift,² but, she named the  butterfly and then told me a story about it and we had one of the longest conversations I had had (up to that point) in Spanish. Her patience and sincerity were truly touching.
One week ago, the town of Intag was holding a Minga (a community wide service project) to finish the ditch for a new water pipe to the school. Emily wandered off during the Minga to return home. She was killed by a taxi that was speeding down a straight road, with no other cars in sight. For years it has been Roberto¹s dream to build a small structure on the ecological reserve that he manages where school children or visitors can come for classes or lectures. We would like to build this in honor of Emily. However, we need to raise four thousand dollars in order to begin construction

Thank you for your time,
Annie de Mayo

PROGRESS UPDATES

We met Annie in Otovalo , Ecuador on Nov 09 2008 and discussed about how AFH Indy chapter can help with her project for the school house in Intag. We will be partnering with Annie de Mayo and Veronica of AFH Quito chapter to help with the planning and design for the school house. Currently, Annie and the community in Intag has already started the construction of a smaller school house shown in the images above but hoping to start with getting additional funding to design and construct the larger planned classrooms / meeting space for the community. Please check back for more informations as we will be contacting Annie / AFH Quito and updating the progress.
